Nudge Value Index - How it works

The Nudge Value Index has been live for about a month, so we thought we’d share how your individual ‘magic’ value is calculated!

Nudge Value Index Screeshot

If you haven’t had a go yet, the value index has been designed as a way of benchmarking your activity, popularity and influence amongst your friends and contacts on Facebook - basically how much presence you have in your own network.

Behind the scenes we’ve broken down user-behaviour into three areas:

  • Activity:
    • Amount of status updates (last 30 days)
    • Amount of uploaded photos (last 30 days)
    • Amount of links posted (last 30 days)
  • Social:
    • Amount of groups you’re part of (ever)
    • Amount of events you’ve been invited to (last four months)
    • Amount of photos you’ve been tagged in (last 30 days)
  • Popularity:
    • How many friends you currently have
    • Percentage of your friends that have the value index app installed

We give each of these three main areas a weighting, then add them up, which gives you your final value (can be recalculated once a day).

So not voodoo then, and not just random. We’ve tried to take into account as many aspects of activity and friend-participation as possible and not just gone for a popularity contest. Would be great to hear your feedback - think it’s well balanced? Maybe we should be taking something else into account? Or just not happy with your ranking? At the time of writing I’m 4776th so you’re not the only one…

what does this exactly signify? Does having a higher result mean higher popularity? :)
I’m not sure if I get the point of this entire thing. I received an email about applications and stuff, but it wasn’t at all clear what this is all for. =)

Your calculator is WAY off base. I have friends who have not been online for three days who have a higher score than mine and I am on fb for 17 hours a day, every day.
I think your calculator is broken. I posted 121 photos, 5 videos and made 40 friends in the last 3 days, and my score keeps going down.
Can you please tell me how this is possible?

    What about:
    - messages sent & received? [all 3 categories]
    - applications participating in? [activity]
    - # log-ins/evaluation period (monthly like the others?) [activity]

The number and size of groups/causes created should be a factor.

How do you raise your level when you are not computer savvy and do not tag photos (don’t even know how to do that.) I don’t know how to upload photos or post links. So if I am on just for the friends and networking my social value suffers because I am not computer savvy. Do not think that is fair.

The whole concept of virtual popularity is sick. As if our society is not screwed up enough that you put out an application to hook people who already have poor real life social skills. Facebook at best is a trivial way in which to waste time. Real Life Value Index is a lot more important than this computerized crap.

wow. ppl….it’s just entertainment. i think most ppl don’t take this too seriously. soooooooo…if you complain anymore i will put a hit on you and my mafia will ice you. :P

Gina, note that alot of people who dont actually care about this, and the majority of facebook anyway doesnt have Mafia Wars.

Facebook is a way to waste time, and get in contact with friends so you can arrange to meet them in real life. Its mostly just so you can keep up to date with stuff. Which is cool, but this whole Social Value Index is taking things to far since all those who are not generally sociable are going to start trying to make themselves have a higher index on here, and therefore are going to suffer from an even worse social life because this thing is going to drag them in.
Yes, this is just an entertainment app, but not everybody will see it in that way..

Lol so in other words… the more you spam your friends homepages with junk, the more ‘popular’ you’ll be. Nice.

this is a very fallacious test, i know someone who took the test, most people like his posts, status and everything that he could share. He really makes a great impact every time he logs in. He only has little pictures for privacy reasons, since a lot of people stalk him every minute (proves his popularity). He is a very influential in this social networking site however he gets a very low facebook value index. so people who take this test must not take it that it is for REAL. I can’t see a straight logic to this type of test.

I am sorry, to the author, but this is the truth. and if other people will not know this they will be forever be blinded by your test.

BTW i got a high score here and i am just criticizing your work..

Does this make sense to anyone??? I have been on vacation then my computer stopped running now I find out that my social value number is low whatever is that all about I really don’t care because I am having fun doing what I want to do….

  17. 17 Bob

As long as they don’t spam me, and I can take it off if I don’t like it later, I don’t care.

How do the participation in the game applications that require you to continuously build up your friend network as a part of the game application factor into the overall score?

This app is so cool it should be used to determine our Prime Minister

In fact, perhaps we could be ultra-modern and use it to choose between Harry and William for who should be the next King?

well then, this is completely dumb….. I guess it calls for a trip to applications > edit applications > Nudge Social Value Index.
